In October of 2000, half the members of Progressive Baptist Church stepped out on faith and called one another to agree to stay together as a church family.
On October 17, 2000, those members met at the home of Bro. & Sis. Robert Jones. The meeting opened with a prayer by Rev. Anthony Sims. The member’s present were:
- Rev. Anthony Sims Bro. Robert Jones Bro. Gedone Spencer
- Bro. Buster Stroud Bro. Shawn Spencer Sis. Bertha Willis
- Sis. Sallie Jones Sis. Devalon Spencer Sis. Artelia Stroud
- Sis. Fannie White Sis. Catherine Buchanan Sis. Linda Dandridge
- Sis. Elaine Hibbler Sis. Carolyn Willis Sis. Mary McCaa
The members present agreed to re-organize themselves as a new church and agreed to call Rev. Anthony Sims as their Pastor. Rev. Sims asked those members what should be the name of our new church? Sis Mary McCaa suggested the name Divine Faith Missionary Baptist Church. Rev. Sims then asked the members for a church motto. Sis. Devalon Spencer suggested “Walking by Faith God’s Way”. Everyone was in agreement with the church name and church motto. There was a suggestion made by Sis. Carolyn Willis and Sis. Elaine Hibbler of planting our first seed into our new church. Rev. Sims asked for the member’s to be looking for a church building for the Divine Faith Missionary Baptist Church to worship and to communicate with one another on this location.
On October 22, 2000, the first church service of Divine Faith was held at the Holiday Inn located on Airport Hwy & 10th Ave. North. On that Sunday, all the members present joined under the new name “Divine Faith” and agreed to serve under the leadership of Pastor-elect Rev. Anthony Sims.
God opened several church doors for our newly formed church to worship. They were: Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Macedonia 17th St. Baptist Church, Faith Church-Ensley, Southside CME, and 1st Baptist – East Lake. In between time we worshipped with other churches and made plans to worship at each other homes for Prayer Meeting and Bible Study.
Over time, we continued to look for a church building to purchase for our weekly worship services. Several locations were considered and looked at until several members passed by and looked our present location. After worship service on a Sunday, the remaining members stopped by to look at the location in Gate City. The church was called together and led into prayer by Rev. Sims. On January 31, 2001, members gathered together to discuss the purchase of the building. Through the power of God, the Divine Faith Church was able to purchase the entire block, consisting of the building and surrounding land.
On February 6, 2001, the Divine Faith Church became incorporated and was listed in the Birmingham News.
On February 16, 2001, before the closing of the church, as storm came through Gate City and damaged our building. God’s hand was still moving and Little Rock CME held the insurance on the building and took care of all the expenses. During the re-construction of the building, we were able to worship at one of their other locations until Easter Sunday, April 8, 2001.
On April 15, 2001, we the Divine Faith Church held our first worship service in our new church edifice. During this time, we were able to purchase a P.A. System, a heating unit, an alarm system, and furnish the Pastor’s office.
On December 30, 2001, we were able to install Rev. Anthony Sims as our first Pastor. Under his leadership, we began community outreach, we purchased a Central Air Unit for the sanctuary and window units for the fellowship hall, and a water system for the church. Other gifts were also donated to our church.
On July 1, 2004, Rev. Anthony Sims resigned as Pastor and this left a void in our leadership. Through prayer, Rev. Clyde Beverly, Sr. agreed to be our pulpit conductor as we began our search for a new pastor.
On the third Sunday in May 2005, Rev. Alfonso Ross, Jr. was elected as the second Pastor of Divine Faith and was installed on August 14, 2005. Under his leadership, our church did contenue to grow. Rev. Ross served as pastor until his resignation on July 2, 2008.
Rev. Roosevelt Howard agreed to serve as Interim Pastor of our church from July to December 2008.
In December 2008, the Lord sent our way our current Pastor, Rev. C. Allen Stewart. On March 8, 2009, Rev. Christopher Stewart was installed as Pastor. In the short time that Pastor Stewart has been here, the following accomplishments have been made: re-structure of all ministries, starting of Brotherhood Ministry, purchase of new wears for communion service, re-model of the Pastor’s office, purchase of baptistry, start of a Women’s Ministry, a weekly Aerobics class, deepened our community outreach efforts, Minister’s Training class, outdoor facelift, Wednesday night feeding ministry, fellowship hall remodeled, kitchen remodeled, men and women’s restroom painted and new flooring, implemented a “Jobs for Life” program, implemented “Rock the Block” Summer Camp, and partnership with Church of Brookhills.
As a result of Pastor Stewart’s commitment to the preaching and teaching of the Word of God, our church has grown and is continuing to grow by leaps and bounds spiritually and physically.
